Final Rational

There were points when I was working on this project that I felt held back by the freedom of choice with the title and content of this book cover. There were other times when I felt held back by the limitations of font, and color. I enjoyed the process of iterating on my ideas with these limitations and freedoms in mind. Deciding on a book title that would suite the theme of “psychokinesis” was an interesting process. Psychokinesis has such a broad spectrum of related subjects that I needed to choose one that would work best in a typographical context. Through the various explorations and mind-mapping different ideas, finally coming to the conclusion to use the word “Metaphysical “ was very satisfying. By exploring the themes of duality in psychokinesis, and the difference between mundane reality and the fantastical aspects of ESP. Choosing the word metaphysical and breaking it up into two components with the “Meta” component being warped across the front cover and the “Physical” component being grounded in the bottom of the cover. Through several iterations of “warping” the Meta text the final design came not just from an effect that alters the text, but also the decision to have the word take up a large portion of the front covers compositions. Stretching to points that would fall outside of the cover and wrap around the spine of the book. This decision to warp the text also needed to be present in the back cover with the blurb, puff quote and auto biography. Simple text boxes were not enough. To continue the theme I modified the boxes with warps themselves. The last component that I received feedback for was an idea to include a lighter tinted shadow to the “meta” text. This was the final component that added some depth to the front cover. Including it on the back cover as a short of “Shadow” or “reflection” also added great fill to the uniform blackness of the older design.
